Why did you decide to study advertising? I like that we are the social scientists of our age. I like not the banner ads that you see, but the ability to create social change.

Can you tell me a bit more about the project you’re doing now? Right, so the project is called #OurMemoriesMatter. You can see the campaign here, the process here and the media attention here and here. You can learn a bit more about it in the videos and here. In short though, the idea for the campaign was hatched after the news of the Umpqua College shooting broke out. We needed to raise awareness about the issue of gun violence in the United States. We sought to do this by making it personal.

Why do you think gun violence is an important issue? Gun violence affects everyone. You can’t find a person that doesn’t agree that gun violence is an issue. The divisions begin to occur when campaigns like ours seek to provide the solution to a problem that needs far more attention and thought than any one campaign can provide. That is why our focus is not on providing a solution, but to create one by sparking discussion without picking sides and alienating people that have already dug in and decided on their opinions regarding the issue.

What’s your dream job? Dream title is social scientist.

How would you describe your personal style? Goodwill mixed with my girlfriend’s style.

What do you mean by “girlfriend’s style”? She helps me out.

How has your style changed since you started dating? Actually not a whole lot. She just kind of tells me which colors to pick out. She helps me out a little bit.

Do you think you stand out being a better dressed guy on campus? I don’t think so. I think the ad school is pretty hip. But, I think it’s all about expression: wearing something that you can feel comfortable in and that people look at and think, “That’s not what I would wear, but what the hell he looks good.”

Do you think your style relates to what you study? I think it relates to my personality.

What’s your personality? Lazy, procrastinator, determined, passionate. Funny?

What’s a recent clothing find that you’re digging? Sweatpants.

Like joggers? Yeah. Just comfortable clothing. I really like Birkenstocks.

How has your style changed over time? I think the older you get, across everybody, which is why college is so interesting, you kind of find your style based on who you are. You look around, you come to college and everyone is like, “Fuck high school. I’m not living with my parents anymore. I can wear what I want and be myself.” So, you see every sort of style. Everyone’s style is kind of who they are.

Do you have any style inspirations? Honestly? I look to a lot of advertising greats, and I think their style influences mine, but my Goodwill/Target/Fred Myers fashion sense reflects my personality in more ways than not. I think my biggest inspiration is cost savings and the latest color sale at Goodwill.

What song have you been digging recently? I’m a musician, so I feel like I’m not able to answer with one song because it’s different every morning.

What’s this morning’s song? I’m a big jazz fan. I play upright bass. So we were listening to a little bit of Coltrane this morning.

How did you start playing music? I started playing the upright bass in third grade when I lived in Maryland. Their music education system starts much earlier over there! Here is some of my music (plus a GIF of me playing the upright bass in third grade). I have my own upright bass that I refurbished in 2012. I play mostly jazz now.

What do you like about playing music? It’s expression through sound.

Do you see music being incorporated into your career? Yeah, definitely.

Are you nervous about graduating? Not at all. I’ve always lived for the next big thing, the unpredictable, the unknown. Graduation is just the next step on a large path where we don’t even know the destination. [It’s a] cliche, but a good outlook that keeps me grounded. I am hoping to secure a spot at an ad agency somewhere out west. I enjoy advertising. A good friend of mine once called advertisers the “social scientists” of our age. Advertising is in many ways chemistry. Especially good advertising, that makes you care about a brand. Creating social change. Now that is advertising worth working for.
