Desiree wears a cute black and white striped dress layered with a jean jacked she thrifted and some cute Mary Jane heels to accessorize.

What does fashion mean to you? It means I’m able to express myself in a way in which I can show that my taste is very different from other people’s. For me, if I find something with stripes or polka dots, that’s kind of my thing. I like to stand out with bold patterns or bright colors.

Desi found this statement necklace for only a few dollars, adding class to many of her outfits.

How would you describe your style? I think the best way to put it is classic or very pieced together. In high school, I started to really care about making a statement with my outfits. I wanted to leave a good impression, and that proved to be very beneficial now that I’m gaining experience in the journalism world.

Where do you usually shop? Thrift stores! I love them and always come out with a piece that would have been $100 somewhere else. I love finding items that create a combination one usually wouldn’t think of; such as making this formal dress and heels casual with a thrifted jean vest. I don’t want to simply follow a suggested color palette, but create something that adds an entirely new meaning to fashion.

Desiree’s earrings add a light and airy contrast to her peach-tinted cheeks.

If you could change one thing about the fashion industry, what would it be? I think I would change the fact that  each season, designers come out with similar fashions, and everyone is striving to find that same piece. I would want designers to make their pieces more unique and not necessarily trending.

What’s your best style advice? Don’t go with what’s trending. Go to a yard sale, a thrift shop, even sift through the clothes your friend is getting rid of. Find something that might be a little odd or trending from a previous generation because that’s something someone will notice. It’s an outlet for you to make a statement. So why not make something old new again?

A red lip will spice up any outfit, classic like Desiree’s, or a casual thrift ensemble.
