Name: Hayden F.
Majors: Philosophy, Women’s and Gender Studies
Minors: Queer Studies, Ethnic Studies
Why did you choose to pursue all of these majors and minors? I first started as a women’s and gender studies major and wanted to expand upon that by taking up feminism in an intersectional way, so queer studies and ethnic studies really helped that. Philosophy has just always been interesting for me, and I really like taking some of the perspectives from gender studies and critiquing philosophy and some of its problems.
Hayden keeps it stylish, yet comfortable on a brisk spring day in a Goodwill thrifted flannel, comfy high-waisted jeans and classic All Star converse.
If you had to describe your style in one word, what would it be? Vegan, maybe. I guess I just try and choose things that are more ethical. I get most of my clothes at thrift stores to not use resources to make more clothes. I also don’t wear any animal products.
Hayden just recently got his classic, black and white Chucks from his mom as a gift. He got his light-wash jeans from House of Vintage – a thrift store in Portland that, according to Hayden, has a great selection of high-waisted, mom jean styles.
Are there any fashion trends that you love or hate currently? I really hate the term man bun because it’s just a bun. I recently started putting up my hair sometimes and have had people say, “Oh, you’re going for the man bun!” and I’m just like, “No, I’m going for the bun.”
Hayden got his all black, pin adorned backpack his sophomore year of high school out of a clearance bin at some store – he couldn’t recall which one.
I see that you have a lot of piercings! Tell me about those. I really like opals; They’re not my birthstone or anything. I just think that they are really pretty. All of my piercings are opals. I have a couple custom ear projects that some people in Portland designed for me. I just really like piercings and just adorning my body with fun things.
Hayden’s all opal piercings add a seriously unique pop of color to any look.
Do you have any tattoos? I do. I have a fair amount of tattoos around. I like them a lot. I don’t know why. I think it’s just that they are really interesting markers of different times in your life. I think that a lot of people focus too much on the whole, “Oh, this tattoo has to mean a lot to me” but I think if it means something to you at the time, it’s a marker of where you’ve been.
